Supporting Children and Youth with Disabilities and their Families
Organization Mission:
To advance effective parent engagement in education.
Please support programs supporting family engagement and self-advocacy through DoMore24DE!
There are approximately 24,000 children and young adults (ages 3-21) receiving special education services in Delaware. For many families, understanding their child's (or their own) disability, or familiarizing themselves with the medical and educational supports their child may need can be overwhelming. PIC provides information and training for students with disabilities and their families to help them:
- Better understand their disability (or their child's disability) and needs
- Understand the rights of students and parents in special education
- Communicate effectively with their child's school and service providers
- Participate fully in decision-making processes, especially in the development of their (or their child's) IEP or 504 Plan
- Utilize self-advocacy and community supports to assist with employment or college after graduation
Parent Information Center of Delaware (PIC) staff respond to requests from families, educators, students and professionals for information about their special education rights, disability supports, and services and trainings. In 2023, staff responded to over 3,200 inquiries and more than 1,900 families, caregivers and professionals participated in one of PIC's trainings.
$10 – Pays for a 30 minute one-on-one consultation with a family/caregiver, student/self-advocate, educator or professional serving a child with a disability
$40 – Covers the cost to attend one (1) IEP meeting with a parent, student/self-advocate, grandparent or caregiver
$100 – Covers the cost of a parent workshop and support materials for five families
Every child is unique, and not only capable of learning, but also succeeding! Please help us reach our goal to continue support for children and youth with disabilities and their families in Delaware by helping them become the best self/advocate they can be!
