Art is Everything

A fundraiser for The Delaware Contemporary

$755 raised from 10 donors

$2,500 goal

I’m Marla Norton.

I’m fundraising for The Delaware Contemporary.

As you probably know, I am currently in the sixth year of my second term on the Board of Directors of The Delaware Contemporary (a/k/a The Delaware Center for Contemporary Arts, Inc. or TDC).  As someone who has always loved art (and was urged by my undergraduate art teachers to pursue art as a vocation), my career choice led me on a very right-brain path. As a young, single lawyer, I would take an art class on Wednesday night and found it incredibly rejuvenating -- I returned to work on Thursday reinvigorated.  Years later, as a TDC Board member, I read the results of a study by researchers at the University of Delaware who, partnering with TDC, found that elementary school students whose curriculum included art classes performed better on their core academic subjects. This spoke to me, because my personal experience supported that conclusion -- that exercising the left side of your brain actually stimulated the right brain, responsible for analytical thought.  Part of my reason for eschewing a career in the arts was my sense that my work product was not "perfect."  My experience with TDC has exposed me to works in a variety of mediums and has taught me that successful art is not about faithfully reproducing what you see - it is about expression, evoking a feeling or communicating an idea.  As a non-collecting museum, TDC (among other things):
  • features an ever-changing kaleidoscope of works
  • provides resources and residencies for emerging artists and creatives
  • rents on-site studios to working artists
  • collaborates with other arts organizations and non-arts related nonprofits
  •  engages with local schools and students
  • offers classes and workshops to youth and adults.
And the best part - daily admission is FREE. Unfortunately, in this post-COVID world, corporate donors have channeled their funding towards causes that directly provide aid to people in need, ignoring the impact of art on society.  Please help me meet my goal and allow TDC to continue to keep TDC admission free and accessible to all by supporting our efforts during DoMore 24 on March 7 - 8.

About The Delaware Contemporary

Mission: The Delaware Contemporary’s mission is to infuse contemporary art and creativity into the community through compelling exhibitions, dynamic educational experiences, and access to the artistic process.

The museum presents over 20 exhibitions annually of regionally, nationally, and internationally recognized artists that explore topical issues in contemporary art and society. We provide opportunities for local and emerging artists, and are committed to educational and community outreach through various programs. We welcome and embrace all who seek to experience art, offering free admission to ensure equitable access to the arts. Through collaboration with artists, curators, and partner organizations we take risks and push boundaries to inspire new ways of looking at the world, offer artistically stimulating experiences, and engage more people in the transformative power of art to make an impact in our community.
