I’m Kate Callihan.

I’m fundraising for Humane Animal Partners (Delaware Humane Association & Delaware SPCA).

We met Bessie at a DHA fundraiser in early 2008. She caught our eye immediately due to her spotted cow-like coat and sweet personality, and we carried her around all evening. Bessie had a cardiac condition as a young puppy that was expected to cut her life short; we took a chance on her, though, and miraculously, her heart healed, and she went on to live a long, healthy life.

Less than a year after she was adopted, Bessie’s human sister came into her life and grew up alongside her. The two were inseparable for 13+ years. Every road trip, holiday, birthday, and milestone, Bessie was there. Almost every family photo ever taken had Bessie’s spotted coat in the background!

Bessie was the sweetest, gentlest, loyalist, most easy going dog ever. She never once growled, never barked, and licked & licked to show affection. She had the most adorable habits and mannerisms. She watched out the window every day for family members to get home. If she did something she knew was wrong, she would put herself in a corner. And until a year ago, she jumped on the bed to snuggle every night. She was obsessed with coconut oil, loved wandering around the backyard sniffing, and spent many weekends trotting off-leash in the park behind our house.

This past year, Bessie developed some medical challenges, including liver & kidney disease, and her arthritis became severe. It wasn’t until early in 2022 that we began to face the reality that Bessie’s time may be running out. When her arthritis got to the point where she couldn't  walk and rarely left her bed, we knew we had to let her go. Bessie left this world on March 2, 2022. Our incredible vet came to our home to help her cross the Rainbow Bridge in the comfort of her own bed.

I’m raising funds today to support DHA, where Bessie was adopted, and Delaware SPCA, where I've worked for 2 years. Please consider honoring  our “Bessie the Cow Dog” by making a gift in her memory to help other dogs and cats find loving homes. THANK YOU!
