Creating Safe and Healthy Homes

Organization Mission:

Good Neighbors’ mission is to serve and care for people in need by making their homes safer, healthier, and more livable, following Christ’s teaching to love our neighbors. We do this by providing critical home repairs for low-income homeowners at no cost to them.

There are thousands of people in New Castle County living in homes with critical problems like leaking roofs and broken heaters. There are disabled family members who can't get to the doctor because they don't have wide enough doors or wheelchair ramps to safely enter and exit their homes. These are homeowners who cannot afford to keep up with critical home repairs because of high medical bills or the loss of the breadwinner. You can provide the funds that will help 3 families in our area live in a safe, dry, warm, and healthy home, preventing them from being under extreme stress or even on the streets. You can help Grace, an 80 year old woman who just lost her husband to a long illness, or Becky, a single mom of three kids who works two jobs but struggles to pay for medicine and food, or Jim, who is now in a wheelchair as the result of an accident but has a house with only one bathroom and it is upstairs.  We add accessible bathrooms, repair and replace furnaces and roofs, fix plumbing and electrical problems, all at no cost to qualified low-income homeowners.

80 percent of all donations go directly to repairs. We can complete repairs at around one-half of the market cost because we use volunteers and obtain materials at a discount. If you want to provide help to these families in need, your donation will keep their homes warm and dry and accessible for years. Your help will change lives and prevent homelessness. Please help keep these families in their homes, safely. Thank you.
About Good Neighbors Home Repair

Did you know that over 60,000 people in New Castle County live in unsafe and unhealthy homes?  For 34 years, Good Neighbors has been providing critical home repairs for homeowners who cannot afford them. Last year we helped 232 families.  We repair and replace heaters and roofs, provide grab bars and wheelchair ramps, and fix unsafe electrical, plumbing, and flooring problems at no cost to the homeowner. We do not discriminate, and we will fix the home of any qualified low-income homeowner located in New Castle County.

We currently have over 100 families on our waiting list.  They all have stories like Jenneth who had been carrying her disabled daughter down the front door steps to get her to her wheelchair and her bus.  Good Neighbors was able to install a new ramp so her daughter could safely exit the house.  You can provide the funds to keep one family like Jenneth's warm in the winter, dry in the summer, and safe and healthy all year round.  Your donation will go directly to a family in need and will result in a family with lower electric bills and medical bills and could prevent them from facing eviction and homelessness.

If you are interested in volunteering to help, we have multiple options including a service week for area businesses in the spring and in the fall where volunteers repair 2-3 homes in one week, and each summer we conduct week-long summer camps for youth groups to repair homes. These teens learn how important it is to give back to the community. Other volunteer opportunities are available as well.

Please consider donating toward this critical community need for affordable housing. It impacts all of us. Thank you.
