Do More for Kenyan Widows!

Organization Mission:

Based in Newark, DE and operating in South Kenya, our mission is to spark personal, economic, and community development in marginalized communities in Kenya, according to existing customs and culture, by providing clean water, sanitation, and hygiene, empowering women, and equipping people to develop income through improved resource management.

Water is Life Kenya has been helping Kenyans bloom for 17 years. We support Kenyans, especially women, through 4 transformative programs:

  • Clean Water Projects, saving women time;
  • Livestock as a Business, helping women own and manage livestock;
  • How for Widows, supporting widows as they start their small businesses; and,
  • Beaded Handicrafts, purchasing handmade crafts from rural artisans

Since 2022, our Hope for Widows program has helped over 50 Kenyan widows build the skills and confidence necessary to become entrepreneurs. By empowering them with business skills training, seed grants of $150, and 3 goats (long-term investments), this program is changing their lives.

One widow, Koyiaso, said this about the program:

“Before I joined WILK’s Hope for Widows program, I was shy. I felt hopeless. Now I have ideas and can talk in front of people. I am able to make a profit and manage my business. I have enough knowledge so that my business won’t collapse when I have big expenses like school fees. I am known as a business lady, where before people would avoid me because I had nothing.”

About Water is Life Kenya

For 17 years Water is Life Kenya has been bringing clean water, opportunity, and hope to Maasai communities in Kajiado County, Kenya. WILK was founded by Joyce Tannian of Newark and Joseph Larasha of Kenya and has brought clean water to over 90,000 people.

Primarily livestock keepers, the Maasai in this region live on marginal land in a semi-arid, drought prone region of Kenya. Our 4 transformative programs are Clean Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) Projects, Livestock as a Business, Hope for Widows, and Beaded Handicrafts. We believe in empowering communities to care for their own needs and brining increased economic opportunity through investing in people and education programs.

Our communities are just now climbing out of the worst drought in over 40 years. Still, they are in great need, especially in terms of food relief and drought resilience. WILK's commitment is to ensure people have the resources, knowledge, and support they need to lead lives of dignity and truly thrive.
