About Before and After School Community Learning Centers
More than 25,000 children in Delaware are left alone and unsupervised after school (After School Alliance). The LACC Before and After School Community Learning Centers meet this need by providing affordable before and after school care for over 200 students ages 5 to 12 through our two community learning centers based at the LACC main building and William C Lewis Elementary School. The LACC's community learning centers provide various programs that promote academic achievement and social growth. Children receive breakfast in the morning and dinner after school. Program offerings include homework assistance, one-on-one mentoring from University of Delaware Education students, enrichment, recreational activities, and physical education. Each day after school, time is set aside for homework and tutoring. Students have access to computers to complete homework and special assignments. The program offers enrichment activities such as choir, dance, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Kind to Kids, and arts and crafts. Physical activities include basketball and soccer. This program also hosts family nights and other engagement activities for families of participating children. The program ensures low-income minority youth have access to high-quality education and do not fall behind their peers.
About Summer Day Camp
The LACC has operated a state-licensed Summer Day Camp since 1992, serving children from low-income working families. The Summer Day Camp runs Monday through Friday from 6:45 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. for ten
weeks, serving 160 children, ages 5 to 12. High-quality summer learning programs have the potential to help children improve academically. This is especially true for children from low-income families who might need access to educational resources throughout the summer. Activities include Reading Buddies, academic enrichment, arts, physical activity, and various special events. There are field trips to parks and museums, sports are included, and every child learns to swim. As 50% of learning loss happens over the summer, the LACC helps to ensure that learning happens year-round.
