Lewes Junction Railroad and Bridge Association, Inc.
The mission of The Lewes Junction Railroad & Bridge Association (LJR&BA) is to preserve, display and interpret the historical significance of the railroad to Lewes and Eastern Sussex County, Delaware, in an authentic and appealing setting for the education and enjoyment of the public.
The story of local railroad operations is integral to the history of Delaware, and LJRBA is ensuring that story is told. LJRBA continues to build our interpretive display of authentic, vintage railroad rolling stock on the preserved section of track at Lewes Junction, right next door to the Lewes Public Library. With our historic Red Caboose in place, we are working on two additional vintage pieces to join the display: A slope-back coal tender and Pennsylvania Railroad engine #60, a B6sa switching locomotive.
We are completing fabrication and restoration work on the coal tender which held the coal and water used to power the steam engine. Our short-term goal is to install the completed tender at the Lewes Junction railroad exhibit in time for our National Train Day celebration on May 10, 2025.
We will then turn our attention to a full cosmetic restoration of engine #60. Built in 1913 and retired in 1952, the engine has been moved to various locations over the past 73 years. LJRBA aims to give it a permanent home as part of our Lewes Junction exhibit.
Your gift will be used to move the tender to Lewes Junction and to help restore the locomotive. Both pieces will ultimately join the Red Caboose (ca. 1917) on the preserved track. When completed, the “Lewes Junction” site will be a prime location for activities and events to educate visitors and residents alike about the importance of the railroad to the history of Lewes and all of Delaware.

Preserving Southern Delaware's Rich Railroad History
The historic preservation work of the LJR&BA has been recognized in proclamations of commendation by the State of Delaware.
LJR&BA has exciting plans for our interpretive display of railroad rolling stock on the preserved section of track right next door to the Lewes Public Library. Already in place is our Red Caboose (Cabin Car) that operated on the rail line during the last run of the Delaware Coastline Railroad in 2017. It is opened for tours and can be explored the first and third Sundays of every month. In addition, a unique steam locomotive (B6sa#60) – in fact the last of its kind - has been identified and secured. We are seeking funds from those interested in preserving the history of our railroad heritage to help us restore the locomotive and move it to join the caboose on the preserved track next to the library. When completed, the “Lewes Junction” site will be a prime location for activities and events to educate visitors and residents alike about the importance of the railroad to the history of Lewes and the region.
