Support The Ministry of Caring's Emmanuel Dining Room
Organization Mission:
The mission of The Ministry of Caring is, simply, to serve the needs of the poor with dignity, respect and love. We welcome the hungry for nutritious daily meals in our two dining rooms. We also provide emergency shelter for the homeless, job placement and assistance, high-quality childcare, and affordable housing for lower-income seniors. The Ruth Balick Distribution Center is a collection, storage and distribution point for donated food, clothing, furniture and household items that are given at no cost to anyone in need. In July 2025, we celebrated the groundbreaking of our latest facility, Villa Maria, which will provide 74 additional units to those in need of safe, secure housing. Plans are in the process to create our fifth senior affordable housing program, Village of Francis & Clare, a 51-unit high rise. Our philosophy is that the poor should never be treated poorly.

While statewide food insecurity in Delaware sits at 12.6 %, the crisis is nearly three times more acute in the neighborhoods surrounding the Emmanual Dining Room (EDR), where food insecurity reaches a staggering 30%. According to ChristianaCare's 2022 Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA), the zip codes we support are located in areas with approximately 35% poverty, well above the county average. In 2025, EDR served 183,741 meals to 142,704 men, women, and children at two locations. This was a 12% surge over the previous year, including a rise of 21% in the number of children served. There is never a fee and no questions are asked.
Rising food costs, high inflation, rising rents, along with reductions in government benefits for nutrition such as SNAP, have seen a rise in demand for food at both Emmanuel Dining Rooms. Last year, your generous support helped us help over 18,000 Delawareans.
