“Freeing yourself was one thing, claiming ownership of that freed self was another.”
Toni Morrison, Beloved

America was founded as the land of the free and the home of the brave.  However, that freedom has historically been limited to a specific few, subjugating the larger whole to a lesser liberation.  Since our arrival in those young colonies, Black women have carried the mantle of bravery while remaining shackled to the stone of injustice – freedom within sight, but out of reach.  As America strides ever closer to her stated ideals, Ode (OWED) to BLACK WOMEN seeks to document and celebrate the stories of Black women.  Please join us as we claim our freedom.

Pieces of a Dream, Inc. is developing a new choreographic work that highlights the experience of Black women in America. Specifically, the work lead by choreographer Ashley SK Davis focuses on presenting, through modern dance choreography, the ways in which Black women participate in and are rejected by the ideals of The American Dream. With the research guidance of Dr. Emerald Christopher-Byrd (Women & Gender Studies), this partnership will highlight the experience of Black women as related to matriarchy, girlhood, feminism, women's suffrage, Black disenfranchisement, and patriotism.  This months-long project will culminate in the premiere of a Fall 2022 evening-length dance production.

Here's how to get involved:
  1. Make a donation today!
  2. Register for our oral histories movement workshops!
