At DCH, we believe that horticulture education can open the door to not just gardening, but also access to employment.
Since 2009, in DCH Branches to Chances® (BtC), program, we have helped individuals facing barriers to employment gain real skills, real confidence, and real jobs through horticultural training. More than 110 people have completed the program. The results are life-changing stability.
Last year marked a major milestone. We formalized our workforce development program by receiving accreditation from The Corps Network (TCN), a national leader advancing programs that transform lives through career development, conservation, and civic engagement. Today, DCH proudly operates Delaware’s only TCN accredited corps program.
This spring, eight individuals are actively building their futures through BtC, gaining skills, earning wages, and contributing meaningfully to their communities.
And we’re just getting started.
This summer, we’re launching the Urban Conservation Corps, a 12-week workforce program for young adults ages 18–25. Corps members will build skills while supporting our greening efforts. Up to eight participants will work side-by-side with our program leaders in urban agriculture, community forestry, public gardens, and landscapes. They’ll plant trees, grow food, restore public green spaces, and build skills while contributing to a greener community.
Your support doesn’t just fund a program; it funds opportunity and transformation.
About The Delaware Center for Horticulture
Since 1977, the Delaware Center for Horticulture (DCH) has worked alongside communities to transform underused and overlooked spaces into vibrant places of beauty, connection, and resilience. What began as a small volunteer-led initiative has grown into a trusted leader in urban greening, environmental education, and community revitalization throughout Wilmington and New Castle County.
We are rooted in the belief that access to nature, clean air, healthy food, and green space is essential — not optional. Much of our work takes place in neighborhoods that have faced disinvestment, environmental burdens, and limited access to fresh produce. By integrating horticulture with workforce development, public health, and sustainability, we help strengthen the social fabric and create greener, more livable communities.
