Aetna Hose Hook and Ladder Company's mission is to provide leadership and support to reduce the loss of life and property and protect our district from all types of hazards through a comprehensive all hazards emergency response program. The program consists of fire prevention, fire suppression, emergency medical response and emergency management for our district citizens.
Ropes are a basic but important tool for firefighters. It is important to have a quality supply of ropes available at all times. Our firefighters primarily use ropes, specifically "life safety ropes," to rescue people from heights or confined spaces by lowering them down to safety using specialized knots and anchoring techniques, essentially acting as a lifeline in situations where ladders or other access points are unavailable; they can also use ropes to navigate through smoke-filled rooms during search and rescue operations. In the above photo, our firefighters with the assistance of the New Castle County Special Operations Team, utilized ropes to lower a critically injured worker from the roof of a large warehouse building. Use of ropes made this operation possible.
