Help Protect Children at Summer Camp
Organization Mission:
We believe that child abuse can be prevented through effectively educating adults and children, developing the next generation of child welfare professionals, and strengthening child protection laws around the country.
- The summer camp industry is a $26 billion industry.
- Twenty-five million children - including thousands throughout the state of Delaware - attend summer camps across the country each year.
- The United States is home to approximately 30,000 summer camp operations.
This year, the Beau Biden Foundation for the Protection of Children will create child safety programming specifically for the summer camp service model. This program will address safety measures such as:
- Parameters for supervision and accountability
- Steps to take in case of an emergency situation, such as a missing child, medical emergency, abuse disclosure, lockdown, or evacuation
- Guidelines for staff and counselor interaction with children.
The Beau Biden Foundation is proud to partner with the Meow Meow Foundation in support of this initiative. Established by Doug and Elena Forbes after the preventable drowning death of their daughter, Roxie, at summer camp, The Meow Meow Foundation’s mission is to protect children with end-to-end drowning prevention and camp safety programming.
Thanks to generous support from the Meow Meow Foundation, donations to the Beau Biden Foundation during Do More 24 will be matched up to $5,000.
Your gift from 6PM on Thursday, March 2nd, through 6PM on Friday, March 3rd, will help equip summer camp counselors and caregivers with the tools they need to ensure the safety of the campers in their care.
The Data:
- According to a May 2022 Mott Poll Report, fewer than half of parents surveyed feel confident they can determine whether a summer camp can keep their child safe.
- While most states require overnight camps to be licensed, there are no national regulations that require licensure or American Camp Association accreditation.
- According to a study conducted by Church Mutual Insurance Company, 57% of parents are concerned their child may experience some type of abuse at summer camp, including sexual abuse, physical abuse, or bullying.
