Family Promise of Northern New Castle County helps local communities coordinate their compassion to address the root causes of family homelessness. We address the issue holistically, providing diversion services to divert families from shelter altogether, shelter and case management when they become homeless, and stabilization programs once they have secured housing to ensure they remain independent.
Family Promise continues to strengthen its organizational capacity to respond to the steadily increasing number of families experiencing homelessness in Delaware. To meet this growing demand, construction is underway on a new shelter, with completion anticipated in Spring/Summer 2026.
This expansion will allow Family Promise to double the number of families we are able to shelter at any given time. The new facility will include a commercial kitchen, enabling us to provide free, nightly meals to all families staying at the shelter. The commercial kitchen will also allow volunteers to prepare meals on site, fostering deeper connections between families, volunteers, and the broader community.
Every family served will be paired with an on-site Case Manager who will work closely with them to identify and address barriers to securing and maintaining permanent housing. Family Promise supports families through all three core components of housing stability: identifying housing, paying for housing, and remaining housed long-term.
The expansion project will significantly increase Family Promise’s shelter capacity, positioning the organization to better meet the rising demand for services among families experiencing homelessness. Each shelter unit will include two private rooms and a private bathroom with a shower. Additional amenities will include warming kitchens, washer and dryer access, a computer room, free Wi-Fi, office space, and multiple secure entryways—ensuring families have access to safe, dignified, and supportive accommodations while working toward housing stability.
Family Promise is the primary provider of shelter and homelessness resources for families in the State of Delaware. Family Promise is often the only shelter capable and able of serving larger-sized families, primarily because our shelter units contain two units of space. This enables us to serve families sized 6 members and above.
Each contribution directly supports stocking our pantry, filling refrigerators, and preparing our new shelter for families in need. Together, we’re creating a space where meals are shared, futures are rebuilt, and families can find stability.
In Delaware, 1 in 30 kids experience homelessness each year. Yet when families become homeless, they can’t always access shelter — in many cases because of their size or composition, or simply because there aren’t enough shelter beds available. Family Promise NNCC has always been dedicated to serving families of all kinds. We are able to keep families together, then help them move back into housing faster, more successfully, and more cost-effectively than anywhere else in Delaware. This past year we served 124 families experiencing homelessness compromised of over 436 parents and their children, empowering 82% of them to obtain permanent housing in an average of just under 90 days!
