Support a Woman With the Gift of Education

Organization Mission:

Our mission is to provide college tuition as well as one-on-one mentoring to adult Delaware women facing financial and personal challenges. These women, many of whom are single mothers and first in their family to attend college, desire to extricate themselves from these challenges to join the ranks of college graduates, thereby opening doors to new opportunities and setting a positive example for their family, neighborhood and wider community. With degree in hand, our graduates acquire upward economic mobility through higher-paying, more stable careers which are likely to withstand the turmoil of economic downturns such as we experienced during the pandemic. They have earned a "fresh start" in life through the power of education.

The pandemic has had profound effects on low-income women and particularly women of color. Perhaps philanthropist MacKenzie Scott said it best:  "The pandemic has been a wrecking ball in the lives of Americans already struggling.  Economic losses and health outcomes alike have been worse for women, for people of color and for people living in poverty."   Fresh Start has been ahead of the curve on this dilemma, raising and awarding over $1,200,000 in college scholarships to more than 260 low-income Delaware women since inception in 1996.  Our founders recognized that this underserved population of low-income adult women had the intellect and determination to break free of a downward economic spiral but lacked the means.  They recognized the pivotal role these women held in shaping future generations.  Since then, nearly 50% of our scholars have been African-American. Nearly 20% have been Hispanic.  Never has it been more important to keep our mission alive and growing, responsive to the pandemic-induced turmoil and spotlight on racial disparity. Nearly 90% of all income received goes directly to our scholarship program because we are all volunteers (no paid staff!) and have no bricks and mortar to support.
