JAMA predicts that liver cancer and intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (aka Bile Duct Cancer) will be the third leading cause of cancer death by 2040. Once a cancer of mostly men over 65 it is now seen in MUCH younger men and women, with the average age of diagnosis of 44 and even as young as 9! Cholangiocarcinoma also known as CCA is a rare, aggressive, lethal cancer that is difficult to diagnose, can take up to a year to be diagnosed, often diagnosed at a later stage, has limited treatment options, patients have to often travel long distances to see a cholangiocarcinoma expert, and a poor life expectancy. With drugs often taking 10+ years to get to market even with accelerated approval ....THIS. IS. A. CRISIS! The time is NOW for research and ALL proceeds we raise are earmarked for research only. Last year with the help of our generous donors and volunteers, we were able to fund 2 research fellowship grants...therefore funding more hope.
We have held yearly 5k's, guest bartender events, post billboards to raise awareness, do interviews on radio and TV, and have tell our stories about our journeys with cholangiocarcinoma in print to raise hope for those newly diagnosed.
Our founder and Chair's incredible Mom was stolen by cholangiocarcinoma in 2011. At that time she was told she had no risk of getting cholangiocarcinoma as it was not genetic, however in 2018, she too, was diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma. After having 5 x 7" of her liver removed at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in NYC and 6 months of Chemotherapy, she and her husband decided they wanted to try to make a difference.
In 2022 Jan was honored to receive the Mark R Clements Award for Excellence in Community Impact and was a 2022 Governor's Outstanding Volunteer Service Award Recipient for her work to raise awareness in DE. Jan was also appointed by Governor Carney to the DE RDAC (Rare Disease Advisory Council) where she looks forward to making a difference for ALL rare diseases.
Please help us raise money in hopes of a cure for cholangiocarcinoma.
Thank you ever so much for your consideration.
