Big Brothers Big Sisters of Delaware’s Athlete Mentor Program (AMP) helps student-athletes balance the mental challenges of academics, athletics, and skill development while preparing them for success after high school. Whether they’re competing in sports, exploring higher education opportunities, or finding an ideal career, students thrive with the guidance of a mentor, especially one who has similar interests and experiences. As former student-athletes themselves, AMP mentors are uniquely qualified to guide students in juggling the demands of school and sports. The Athlete Mentoring Program is centered around a human development approach; providing youth multiple opportunities and access to mental and physical support to enhance their overall wellbeing.

The Athlete Mentor Program provides middle and high school student-athletes with the focus and resources to succeed through comprehensive enrichment experiences with adult mentors. Sustaining focus is not an easy task for adolescents, it can be hard for youth to concentrate, especially youth who face challenges at home. Our children are in a society that provides vast opportunities and equal amounts of danger. Big Brothers Big Sisters aims to help make positive, informed decisions and navigate the complexities that go along with the stress of being a student-athlete. The program offers the direction and tools to help them win the game! 

Employing a human development approach, The AMP program offers extensive enrichment experiences for student-athletes, with a heavy concentration on social emotional learning, executive skills training, character development, healthy eating and prevention, and college career path exploration. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Delaware takes a variety of steps to ensure the success of the youth participating in the Athlete Mentoring Program by employing a well-rounded program that includes wrap around services, comprehensive case management, and retention services up to 3 months after the end of participation.
