Water is Life Kenya
Organization Mission:
Based in Newark, DE and operating in South Kenya, our mission is to spark personal, economic, and community development in marginalized communities in Kenya, according to existing customs and culture, by providing clean water, sanitation, and hygiene, empowering women, and equipping people to develop income through improved resource management.
From Delaware to Kenya with Water & Life
Our local Delawarean, FLOTUS Jill Biden, just travelled to Kenya. One of her stops was Lositeti, a town just miles away from where Water is Life Kenya, a nonprofit based in Newark, DE has worked for 16 years.
Water is Life Kenya (WILK) started 16 years ago with a simple hope--to put love in action for people who were left behind. From our office in Newark and led by our fearless leaders--Newark native Joyce Tannian and Kenya native Joseph Larasha--WILK has brought clean water and improved livelihoods to over 80,000 people in Southern Kenya.
Currently, the worst drought in a generation is sweeping East Africa and is devastating the indigenous Maasai communities we serve. The Maasai are primarily livestock keepers, so when it doesn't rain, grass doesn't grow, cows go hungry and die, and incomes are decimated. Without incomes, families don't have money to pay school fees, meaning futures are being taken away from hardworking families and students, all because it hasn't rained.
As the First Lady accounted, the situation is dire and urgent.
On this Do More 24, we're seeking to raise $5,000 for continued drought relief efforts in our region of Kajiado County, Kenya, specifically food distribution. We learned that when food is delivered to schools, kids can come back to school and a tremendous burden is lifted from parents. We're hoping to distribute more food to schools in the near future.
The video below is from our recent borehole drilling at Nooriro, which is right down the street from where Jill Biden's visit.

About Water is Life Kenya
For 17 years Water is Life Kenya has been bringing clean water, opportunity, and hope to Maasai communities in Kajiado County, Kenya. WILK was founded by Joyce Tannian of Newark and Joseph Larasha of Kenya and has brought clean water to over 90,000 people.
Primarily livestock keepers, the Maasai in this region live on marginal land in a semi-arid, drought prone region of Kenya. Our 4 transformative programs are Clean Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) Projects, Livestock as a Business, Hope for Widows, and Beaded Handicrafts. We believe in empowering communities to care for their own needs and brining increased economic opportunity through investing in people and education programs.
Our communities are just now climbing out of the worst drought in over 40 years. Still, they are in great need, especially in terms of food relief and drought resilience. WILK's commitment is to ensure people have the resources, knowledge, and support they need to lead lives of dignity and truly thrive.
