What does music mean to you? This was asked at our staff meeting this week and I had trouble putting it into words. Music has been a part of my life ever since I can remember. I have early memories of playing Smurfing Sing Song and Sesame Street Fever on my WKRP in Cincinnati record player in the basement of my childhood home. My second favorite past time was jumping on my mom's bed while belting out The Tide is High by Blondie - one of my favorite songs to this very day. There was concert band (flute), marching band (piccolo), jazz band (alto sax), and school musicals (orchestra and small parts). John Williams provided the soundtrack to my favorite movies. Eventually I stopped playing, but I never stopped listening. I'm listening to music right now as I type this (a great playlist I found on Spotify called "90s R&B and Hip-Hop Party")! Tori is always there for me when I need her. Janet taught me how to dance. And anyone who knows me how much I love Dave, Billie Jo, and Michael. Music is ever present.
I joined the development office at The Music School of Delaware in August 2024, and I love it here. My first week here, the halls were buzzing, strumming, tooting, trumpeting, and singing with summer camps. Later I had the distinct pleasure of hearing a colleague practice a piece he composed every day for a month before he debuted with the Newark Symphony. People of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds come through our doors every day. The one thing they all have in common is music. Many call the School their home, and I understand why.
One thing I love the Music School is that we offer financial aid without a FAFSA, making lessons accessible to everyone! I'm raising money for The Music School of Delaware today not just because I work here, but because I believe in the mission: excellence in music education for all! So what does music mean to me? It means everything. What does it mean to you?
