At Church World Service (CWS) Georgetown in Delaware, we believe in the transformative power of welcome. We extend open arms to refugees, immigrants, asylum-seekers, and all those uprooted by hardship, inviting them to begin a new chapter filled with hope and opportunity. As more than just a resettlement agency, we are a community built on radical love, committed to ensuring that every newcomer finds a safe space to rebuild their lives.

Through our dedicated Reception and Placement services, we empower families to rediscover their potential, nurturing dreams with care and compassion. We hold fast to the conviction that every family deserves safety and dignity, and we work tirelessly to turn that belief into reality.

CWS first opened an office in Georgetown, Delaware in January 2024 in response to the need for an additional resettlement agency in Delaware with a focus on Sussex County and southern Delaware refugees. Since our opening, we have welcomed 108 newcomers to the Georgetown community as they re-build their lives. We have partnered with many of you in the community to provide integration support like food, housing, and job support. We are incredibly grateful for the partnerships and support the community has already provided.

On February 3, due to the U.S. administration’s pause on refugee resettlement funding, CWS made the heartbreaking decision to furlough the majority of our staff in order to ensure that newly arrived refugees still received the critical services they were promised. This devastating reality has placed an overwhelming burden on our remaining team members and severely limited our ability to provide the care and support refugees need during their first 90 days in the U.S. Additionally, CWS has been unable to access federal reimbursements for critical program costs, including those incurred prior to the issuance of the Executive Orders.

These sweeping and harmful policy decisions have severely impacted our ability to maintain programs and serve vulnerable families who rely on us to access critical services.

For more than 75 years, CWS has supported vulnerable communities and helped refugees and immigrants rebuild their lives in safety. No matter the heartbreak and challenges this new administration brings, we remain steadfastly committed to continuing our mission.

Now more than ever, we need our supporters to stand with us and with our refugee and immigrant clients, locally, nationally, and around the world.
