Delaware Historical Society 2026

Organization Mission:

The Delaware Historical Society is a nonprofit organization that preserves, promotes, and shares Delaware’s history to educate, inspire, and empower people and communities.

Preserving and promoting Delaware's unique story starts with caring for the valuable properties that help keep history alive for future generations.

This year, we're dedicating our fundraising efforts to the major projects underway to restore and revitalize our historic spaces, like urgent repairs needed on the roof of our Research Library & Archives building, which protects most of our 3 million artifacts and documents, and the final phase of the garden restoration at the Read House & Gardens, where each gift is matched by a generous grant from the Longwood Foundation.

Your support helps us care for these historic properties through crucial preservation and maintenance efforts including:

  • - Widening and re-grading pathways in the Read House Gardens to make them safe and accessible for guests with strollers and mobility aids;

  • - Improving the irrigation and drainage systems to sustainably manage the gardens and mitigate urban runoff;

  • - Replacing the leaking Research Library & Archives building roof to protect the priceless artifacts in our collections; and

  • - Restoring the damaged ceiling plaster and paint in the Research Library Reading Room caused by the leaks.

These historic spaces are vital and important parts of Delaware's story, but they require ongoing, historically appropriate, and often expensive maintenance to preserve them for future generations. Funds raised during Do More 24 2026 will go directly toward work on these  restoring and maintaining DHS' historic properties.
