About Friends of Delaware's Gambrinus Statue Inc.

Mission: The Friends of Delaware’s Gambrinus Statue's mission through its Restore the King campaign is to repair the iconic sculpture of Gambrinus, the legendary king of beer, and donate it to the Delaware History Museum for display and conservation.

The 11-foot-tall zinc statue was perched upon Wilmington's Diamond State Brewery from 1882 until 1962, after which time it was placed in front of a suburban Wilmington restaurant. The statue was broken into pieces in 1978 and remains in storage under our organization's ownership.

The King Gambrinus sculpture is the most significant artifact remaining from Delaware’s golden age of brewing in the early 20th century when beer production was one of the state's largest and most profitable industries. The statue's renovation is an apt symbol of the rebirth of the craft beverage industry in the First State and its return as a key cultural, economic, and social driver.
