A Message from Sarah E. Williams, Head of School

Dear WMS Community, 

As I reflect on Wilmington Montessori School’s remarkable 60+ year journey, I am filled with gratitude and excitement for all that we have achieved and for the road ahead. Over the past decade, our community has experienced transformative growth, from integrating cutting-edge educational practices to reimagining our role as a leader in Montessori education. The WMS spirit—rooted in collaboration, curiosity and a shared commitment to children—has been our constant guide.

We have embraced opportunities with courage and innovation. From introducing STEAM education and a one-to-one technology program to deepening our understanding of the science of learning, WMS has continually evolved to meet the needs of our students. This progress has been built on the legacy of strong leadership, including my predecessor Lisa Lalama’s 12 years as Head of School. Her vision and dedication strengthened WMS's foundation and set the stage for the next chapter of growth and success.

WMS’s future is as bright as the passion that fuels our community. Building on our rich history, we are committed to advancing Montessori education with a focus on accessibility, diversity, and innovation. Our 2024-27 strategic plan envisions:

  • Enhancing Montessori Methods: Enhancing our curriculum and supporting our talented educators to ensure every child flourishes.
  • Transforming Spaces: Modernizing our campus to inspire discovery and connection.
  • Expanding Impact: Deepening partnerships with families, alumni, and the wider community to sustain our mission.

Guided by our shared vision, we are not only nurturing today’s learners but also shaping tomorrow’s leaders. WMS remains steadfast in its mission to foster independence, creativity, and a sense of global responsibility in every child. Together, we will continue to grow as a thriving community grounded in Montessori principles, where every child is empowered to reach their potential.
